My knowledge of the goings on in the world of sports is about even to my knowledge of the migration pattern of the Canadian Goose. Everyone flies south in the fall & winter.
I didn’t know he was a name people knew. I didn’t know a big deal had just taken place, and a lot of SEC fans were pissed. All I knew was that I had 5 mins with him, there were no windows, and my strobe wasn’t working.

Every Friday, a group of men meet in an old church turned woodworking shop in Helena, AL. Their goal: to create toys for children who are sick and in need. They are the Alabama Woodworkers Guild, and in the past year they have built over 8,000 wooden toys for the Children’s Hospital.
I spent close to 5 hours watching these men give themselves to their labor, like elves in Santa’s shop. An air of joy mingled with sawdust. Each man proud and humble. A generation that was not done giving.

Hannah Miller is one of the greats. Her voice is absolutely enchanting, and if you haven’t heard her new album O Black River, please bless your ears and check it out.
We’re friends and she needed promo pictures. Done.
The location was The Sonnet House, where Laura and I were married 2 years ago.
We wanted to convey a dark feel, as well as a hopeful one. I think they turned out pretty well.
Also, Hannah gave me some whiskey as a thanks. Good friend.

I have amazing friends. One of them is Meredith Carter.
When the tornadoes hit Alabama in April, Meredith jumped into action raising money for the relief effort. The product she sold to raise money was a very simple, very elegant silver necklace.
After the money was raised, she teamed up with a few other amazing people, and decided the money should go towards a big birthday party for the children who lost everything in the tornado. The Lost Birthdays.
I’m so glad to have been able to document the event. Here are 2 of my favorites.
On the second Tuesday of September I woke up at 4am, got in my car, and drove around to 4 different hidden cemeteries in Birmingham, AL.
Strange: yes.
